Maya Kuvaja
Born in Boston in 1975 and raised in coastal Maine, I earned my degree from Maine College of Art and moved to rural western Maine where I currently paint in my studio in the woods. Surrounded by lakes and the foothills of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I am inspired by the wildlife and landscape around me, particularly the beautiful birds. In my current series of mixed media paintings I create collages of repurposed, discarded vintage paper ephemera, book pages, maps, newspapers and combine them with detailed paintings of birds. With these artworks combining abstract, contemporary collage with classic wildlife illustration, I explore themes of our relationship to the natural world, conservation, and my love of these fascinating animals. A Maine Arts Commission grant recipient, my work is shown in galleries and venues in northern New England and collected internationally. |
