The Deconstructing Venus project is a reinterpretation of classical female figures from art historical paintings by male artists. Removed from their context of illustrating scenes of moral lessons or mythological tales for voyeuristic pleasure of male viewers, they are layered with a collage of text and images, redefining the narrative.
These are the images of women, painted by male artists, that inspired my early interest in art. Given their own voice, they are recontextualized self portraits.
Exhibited in a solo show Yarmouth Historical Society, Yarmouth, ME, 2021 This project was funded by a Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Grant. I am grateful for their generous support.
